PRETENSION SYSTEMS

Sare offers pre-tensioning as an effective method of prestressing concrete. In pre-tensioning, tensioned cables are placed within the concrete mold before pouring. As the concrete hardens, it secures the cables in place. Once fully cured, the tension is released, transferring the stress into the beam or slab.

Today, all prestressed bridge beams are manufactured using the pretensioning process, which is more complex than post-tensioning. It involves constructing large “casting beds” to hold highly tensioned steel cables, known as strands, while the concrete is poured into molds.

Pretensioning allows for the creation of larger beams and slabs. These casting beds, located in controlled factory-like environments, enable year-round production under optimal conditions. The length of pre-tensioned beams is constrained by transportation restrictions and the availability of cranes capable of lifting them into place. Unlike steel beams, prestressed-concrete beams must be transported in their finished length and cannot be assembled from shorter units at the bridge site.
